Shade Tolerant • Dense & Compact Growth • Low Maintenance

Shadow Grass Seed Mat

Pre-seeded, biodegradable lawn mat purpose-built to unlock consistent turf performance in shaded environments. Shadow is engineered for shade from trees and buildings, delivering dense and compact growth with a low-input operating profile for water and fertiliser. A small proportion of ryegrass supports rapid germination for faster green-up, while the hot & dry composition includes drought-tolerant grass to de-risk seasonal stress. Best-fit use case: lawns and ornamental areas in shade (moderate wear tolerance).

Strategic positioning: a shade-first lawn program with dense, compact growth and low-input maintenance. Two climate-specific compositions are available; consult the technical datasheet for regional specification and approvals.

Key Performance Ratings

Shadow is engineered for shaded installations (trees, buildings, north-facing zones) where you need dense, compact growth with a low-input maintenance profile. The mix performs well with reduced water and fertiliser, and the hot & dry composition includes drought-tolerant grass. Shade-adapted varieties are optimised for ornamental and lawn surfaces, with moderate wear capacity and faster early green-up supported by a small ryegrass component.

Seed Mixture Composition

Shadow is engineered for lawns in shaded areas (e.g., trees and buildings), delivering dense and compact growth with low input of water and fertiliser. The shade-resistant grass types are built for ornamental and lawn surfaces and can withstand moderate wear. Two climate-specific compositions are available, and the hot & dry configuration includes drought-tolerant grass.

Species Breakdown

% Common name Scientific name Height (cm) Germination time Germination temperature
20% Perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne 10–50 5–10 days Between 20 and 30 °C
40% Red fescue Festuca rubra 10–50 14–21 days Between 25 and 30 °C
20% Chewing's fescue Festuca rubra commutata 15–50 12–22 days Between 10 and 18 °C
20% Kentucky bluegrass Poa pratensis 20–50 14–30 days Between 15 and 30 °C
Note: The proportion of small ryegrass supports rapid germination and quicker early green-up. Shadow is optimised for shaded lawns and ornamental areas; wear tolerance is designed for moderate use cases. Establishment outcomes remain execution-dependent: seedbed preparation, consistent moisture, and irrigation discipline are the primary performance drivers during the first weeks after installation.

Establishment — Typical Timeline

Milestone Typical timing
Germination 2–4 weeks (ideal conditions)
First cut At 8–10 cm (site-dependent)
First use Limited after ~3–4 weeks
Normal foot traffic After 3–5 mowing cycles

Timing depends on temperature, moisture and how well the ground was prepared.

Germination — Lab Results

Test batch Germination (%)
Batch 1 Available on request
Batch 2 Available on request
Batch 3 Available on request

Batch-level certificates can be shared for procurement alignment and QA documentation.

Note: Occasionally, shortages of some varieties may occur throughout the season. Suitable alternatives may be used, and any alteration to the mixture will be clearly shown on the bag label and technical datasheet. The varieties are internationally tested by independent institutes, including in Scandinavian countries.

Planting window & establishment

When to plant Shadow grass seed mats

Shadow is engineered for shaded areas (e.g., under trees and alongside buildings), delivering dense, compact growth with a low-input maintenance profile. It is well suited for reduced water and fertiliser strategies, with a climate-specific composition option that includes drought-tolerant grass for hot & dry conditions. A small ryegrass proportion supports rapid germination, while overall wear tolerance is designed for moderate use—ideal for lawn surfaces and ornamental lawns.

Optimal planting windows

Best results are obtained when seeding in the early spring or fall, when daily temperatures range between 15 °C and 26 °C, as these conditions are ideal for seedling growth.

  • Spring planting: Plant in early spring when temperatures are between 12 °C and 26 °C. This allows time for the seed to grow and establish before facing the hot, dry conditions of summer.
  • Fall planting: Plant in the late summer or early fall when daily temperatures are consistently between 18 °C and 26 °C. Fall is a great time for planting because the warm days and cool nights promote growth.

Establishment & early use

  • Care: Look out for weeds and diseases.
  • Irrigation: Necessary. Water is an essential part of the germination process. Without it, the process will slow down significantly and in worst-case scenarios may stop completely.
  • Germination: 2–4 weeks in ideal conditions.
  • First cut: At 8–10 cm, the lawn may be ready to be mowed within 2–4 weeks of planting (conditions dependent).
  • First use: Limited after 3–4 weeks. Timing depends on weather, time of year and how well the ground was prepared. Only once roots have penetrated the soil and established is the new lawn ready for broader use.
  • Foot traffic & pets: Once you have mowed the lawn 3–5 times, it is generally ready for foot traffic. Keep pets away from newly planted grass, as seeds and young seedlings are delicate and easily damaged.

Timings above assume correct soil preparation, adequate nutrition and consistent watering. Local climate and site conditions can shorten or extend the establishment period.
