Planting window & establishment
When to plant Shadow grass seed mats
Shadow is engineered for shaded areas (e.g., under trees and alongside buildings), delivering dense, compact growth with a low-input maintenance profile. It is well suited for reduced water and fertiliser strategies, with a climate-specific composition option that includes drought-tolerant grass for hot & dry conditions. A small ryegrass proportion supports rapid germination, while overall wear tolerance is designed for moderate use—ideal for lawn surfaces and ornamental lawns.
Optimal planting windows
Best results are obtained when seeding in the early spring or fall, when daily temperatures
range between 15 °C and 26 °C, as these conditions are ideal for seedling growth.
-
Spring planting: Plant in early spring when temperatures are between
12 °C and 26 °C. This allows time for the seed to grow and establish
before facing the hot, dry conditions of summer.
-
Fall planting: Plant in the late summer or early fall when daily temperatures
are consistently between 18 °C and 26 °C. Fall is a great time for planting
because the warm days and cool nights promote growth.
Establishment & early use
- Care: Look out for weeds and diseases.
-
Irrigation: Necessary. Water is an essential part of the germination process.
Without it, the process will slow down significantly and in worst-case scenarios may stop completely.
- Germination: 2–4 weeks in ideal conditions.
-
First cut: At 8–10 cm, the lawn may be ready to be mowed within
2–4 weeks of planting (conditions dependent).
-
First use: Limited after 3–4 weeks. Timing depends on weather,
time of year and how well the ground was prepared. Only once roots have penetrated the soil
and established is the new lawn ready for broader use.
-
Foot traffic & pets: Once you have mowed the lawn 3–5 times, it is
generally ready for foot traffic. Keep pets away from newly planted grass, as seeds and young
seedlings are delicate and easily damaged.
Timings above assume correct soil preparation, adequate nutrition and consistent watering. Local
climate and site conditions can shorten or extend the establishment period.
