Seed Mixture Composition

Extra Green is engineered for a greener lawn with less irrigation and less work. The red fescue-led configuration supports drought resilience and dense coverage, and is recommended for robotic lawnmowers.

Species Breakdown

% Common name Scientific name Height (cm) Germination time Germination temperature
30% Kentucky bluegrass Poa pratensis 10–50 14–30 days Between 15 and 30 °C
20% Chewing's fescue Festuca rubra commutata 10–50 12–22 days Between 10 and 18 °C
30% Slender creeping red fescue Festuca rubra trichophylla 15–50 12–22 days Between 10 and 18 °C
20% Strong creeping red fescue Festuca rubra rubra 20–50 14–30 days Between 10 and 23 °C
Note: The small proportion of ryegrass supports rapid germination and quicker early green-up. Field outcomes remain execution dependent: seedbed preparation, consistent moisture, and irrigation discipline are the key performance levers during the first weeks after installation.

Establishment — Typical Timeline

Milestone Typical timing
Germination 2–4 weeks (ideal conditions)
First cut At 8–10 cm (site-dependent)
First use Limited after ~3–4 weeks
Normal foot traffic After 3–5 mowing cycles

Timing depends on temperature, moisture and how well the ground was prepared.

Planting window & establishment

When to plant Extra Green grass seed mats

Extra Green is positioned as a safe choice for a greener lawn with less irrigation and less work, and is recommended for robotic lawnmowers. To maximise germination KPIs and long-term turf performance, execute installation in cool-season windows and run a disciplined moisture routine through the first weeks.

Optimal planting windows

Best results are obtained when seeding in the early spring or fall, when daily temperatures range between 15 °C and 26 °C, as these conditions are ideal for seedling growth.

  • Spring planting: Plant in early spring when temperatures are between 12 °C and 26 °C. This allows time for the seed to grow and establish before facing the hot, dry conditions of summer.
  • Fall planting: Plant in the late summer or early fall when daily temperatures are consistently between 18 °C and 26 °C. Fall is a great time for planting because the warm days and cool nights promote growth.

Establishment & early use

  • Care: Look out for weeds and diseases.
  • Irrigation: Necessary. Water is an essential part of the germination process. Without it, the process will slow down significantly and in worst-case scenarios may stop completely.
  • Germination: 2–4 weeks in ideal conditions.
  • First cut: At 8–10 cm, the lawn may be ready to be mowed within 2–4 weeks (conditions dependent).
  • First use: Limited after 3–4 weeks. Timing depends on weather, time of year and how well the ground was prepared. Full usability comes once roots have penetrated the soil and established.
  • Foot traffic & pets: Once you have mowed the lawn 3–5 times, it is generally ready for foot traffic. Keep pets away from newly planted grass, as seeds and young seedlings are delicate and easily damaged.

Timings above assume correct soil preparation, adequate nutrition and consistent watering. Local climate and site conditions can shorten or extend the establishment period.
